The first of the Christmas fairs are now underway and if you are one of those organised people who post their Christmas cards before December 24 then this is a great chance for you to be able to pick up all your Christmas essentials while we also have a good selection of cultural events, fairs, markets, arts and charity events for you take your pick from.

Monday, November 12
For the freshest local produce then the best place to go is the local market and today there is a market being held in Algoz, in the Silves municipality. Â The fair here is held in the Largo da VÃ¡rzea and anyone visiting can buy a huge range of different local products. Â Well worth a trip out to for a taste of the real Portugal.
If you have never been to the St Martins fair in PortimÃ£o then this is a good year to go as the event is celebrating its 350th anniversary. Â This is a massive event in the Algarve every year and is a mixture of a funfair with all the usual rides and a big wheel, a country market and a flea market. Â You can buy everything from freshly roasted chestnuts to counterfeit handbags and everything in between here. Â Entry to the fair is free and it is on everyday this week from 10am until late.
Tuesday, November 13
Take a walk along the clifftops and through the wetlands in the Budens area. Â This walk boasts some amazing views with only a few gentle climbs involved. Â Walkers are asked to meet in the car park at Cabanas Velhas near Burgau at 10.30am for the two and a half hour walk. Learn about the history of Arraiolos Carpets during a talk by the Algarve History Association taking place in the municipal library in Lagoa today at 6pm. Â Arriaiolos Carpets are an example of Portuguese creativity within arts and crafts and are intertwined with the very culture of Portugal. Are you a lady who likes to go to lunch? Â Well why not try the new ladies lunch club at the Holiday Inn Algarve, formerly the Hotel Garbe, in ArmaÃ§Ã£o de PÃªra. Â Today is the first meeting of the club and costs â¬15 per person to attend including a three course buffet and wine. Â The lunch starts at 1pm and will include a talk from long time Algarve resident Verna Kinder who will be speaking about local charities and how people can help. Peter Kingdon will be giving a guided walk around the Roman ruins of Milreu today and anyone interested in the history of the Algarve is encouraged to come along and take part. Â The walk will begin at 3pm and those wanting to take part are asked to meet at the entrance to the site in Estoi. Â You don not have to know anything about the subject of the Romans in the Algarve to be able to take part and after the walk there will be a dinner served in the VTerra restaurant in Estoi. If you enjoy motor sports then you will be able to watch the Algarve Casinos rally taking place today and tomorrow (November 17) in and around PortimÃ£o and Praia da Rocha. Pick up some bits and pieces for Christmas at the Christmas coffee morning taking place at the Vale de Milho Golf Club restaurant today. Â The coffee morning, organised by the All Saints Anglican Church, will include homemade preserves and handicrafts, a raffle, Christmas cards and decorations and various different gift ideas. Keeping on the theme of Christmas fairs there is another one taking place today at the charity shop in Ferragudo. Â The shop is located on Rua Henrique near to the Santander Bank in the town and is being held between 10am and 2pm with free hot mulled wine and cookies for everyone who attends, Christmas goodies and a raffle. Â All proceeds from the sales of goods on the day will be donated to the Donkey Sanctuary in Estombar which houses rescued dogs, cats and donkeys from across the region.
If all that Christmas cheer has left you needing something else then you could always visit the auditorium in Lagoa to watch a performance by Linda Scanlon and her band who will be performing “The magic of Irish Celtic music”". Fans of jazz music will be able to watch a live concert from the Jazz Club by Manuela Lopes. Â The concert will be taking place at the Museu do Trajo in SÃ£o BrÃ¡s de Alportel from 5pm. Â Visit the museum website for further details (available in English).
Anyone who enjoys browsing around a flea market will be able to see what bargains are on offer today at various flea markets being held across the Algarve. Â Today the flea markets are being held in Almancil next to the school, in PortimÃ£o at the exhibition centre near to the waterfront between 8.30am and 12.30pm and in SÃ£o BrÃ¡s de Alportel bin the Roberto Nobre park between 8am and 2pm.
