Visiting the library in Portugal is so important and for reasons that may not seem obvious to you. In many of the expat areas in Portugal there are libraries that have a wealth of books which allow the many nationalities to learn Portuguese.
Many people who are new to Portugal and in the process of learning the language find the whole process of visiting the library invaluable in the learning process.
It is not only the fact that the books are first class but you will more often than not be meeting like minded people who will no doubt be going through the same frustrations as you when learning this new language.
The libraries are free to join and require some id but when this has all been sorted out you will be on your way. The language books are usually of a very high quality and many people who have moved to the area have picked up the language in this way.
In rural areas deliveries and collections can be few and far between so many people find that it is far easier to actually rent a post box and simply go and collect the post themselves.
There are many other services available at the Portuguese post office just the same as the UK .
There are certain things that you should be aware of when sending letters and parcels when visiting the post office in Portugal and one of the main differences to other countries, especially the UK, is the Portuguese postal code or codigo postal as it is known. This is written in the form of seven digits with the first digit representing one of the nine postal regions in Portugal. The other digits represent various factors concerning the location.
If there are a few of you it is a great idea to form a small group and meet once a week around someone’s home or even in the local café or bar if you want to make it a bit more fun. Once you have got the basics mastered, and don’t feel like you have to rush, take your time and it will come more naturally, you should go back to the library and borrow a simple children’s story. Take it in turns to learn a couple of pages and then read it out to your small group and then take turns in explaining what the book is actually about.
You will be amazed by how quickly you will learn in this way and before you know it you will be reading books in Portuguese for fun. This is how many people have learnt the language and it is very effective.
Visiting the library in Portugal holds a special place in the heart of expats from many different nationalities as this is the place that enabled them to learn the Portuguese language and go on to enjoy their new life in this wonderful country.
