The chilled white wine in Portugal, perfect with dinner

In my opinion there is nothing better than relaxing over a beautiful meal with my family and enjoying a glass of chilled dry white wine. You may be surprised to know that you can actually buy a good quality bottle of white wine from the local supermarket for around 1 Euro here on the Algarve. I know you may be thinking that it must be some kind of cheap plonk for that price, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The grapes for this wine are grown in Portugal and due to the climate there is fierce competition amongst the country’s wine producers and this results in the lower prices. It must be said though that the wine producers are absolutely passionate about the quality of the wines that they produce and that is obviously great news for the consumers such as me and you.

Once you start to experiment with the many different locally produced wines you will start to have your favourites and you will also find yourself becoming aware of the different regions that the grapes for the different wines are grown. After a while you probably won’t even want to look at wines from other countries as the Portuguese wines really are so very good.

"chilled white wine"In the UK I would occasionally have a glass of white wine with dinner and  I would more often than not suffer with a headache the next morning. This just does not happen here in the Algarve and I have been told that many of the wine producers that export to the UK use all sorts of chemicals in the production of their wine and this can often leave you with a fuzzy head, here in Portugal the whole process is about as natural as you can get and even a novice wine taster like me can really taste the difference without any suffering the next day.

You would probably expect the supermarket wines to be on the cheap side (perhaps not as cheap as 1 Euro a bottle though) but even when you eat out at restaurants you will still be able to get a good quality bottle of wine at a very reasonable price and I find that I enjoy my meal even more when I am safe in the knowledge that I haven’t been ripped of on the wine bill.

Thanks for reading my blog post and I hope you enjoy our expat tips. I love living in the Algarve and sharing my stories with you.

Thanks for reading
