Carnival in the Algarve is traditionally a time for fun and entertainment and this year there will be several special sporting events taking place in the region over Carnival.
The first sporting event for all the family to take part in is the BTT mountain bike race in Loulé. The event is being held tomorrow (Saturday, February 9) from the Club BTT Terra de Loulé from 10am.
This is a mountain bike race for parents and children to take part in together and takes place along a route of 15km.
Children are only able to enter if accompanied by an adult and fancy dress is encouraged for everyone who takes part in the race.
The best dressed riders will win a dinner that night and entry is free to this fun sporting carnival event in Loulé with inscriptions in the race available on the day.
Over in Vilamoura the 39th edition of the International Sailing Tournament will be taking place on February 9, 10 and 11 along the regatta course in Vilamoura.
This is one of the most iconic sporting events in the Algarve and is great to either take part in or just to watch and is an initiative created by the International Marina Club of Vilamoura (CIMAV) in collaboration with the Câmara of Loulé, Lusort, Inframoura, Don Pedro Hotels and Vilamoura Marina.
The race is open to boats in the following classes: Optimist, 420, snipe, F18, dart 18, Laser 4.7, laser radial, laser standard, kiteboarding and windsurfing.
There will also be carnival sporting fun in Lagos at the marina on February 12 with a dingy race in the marina between 2pm and 4pm.
The competition will be between dinghies operated by customers of the marina and will include small inflatable boats, sailboats and small motor boats.
The teams taking part will all be dressed up in fancy dress for the occasion with different themes for different boats and members of the public are encouraged to come down and watch the spectacle which will be taking place from the footbridge over to the marina.
The race will see four boats take part in each round with the winning two boats then progressing to the next stage.
The top four boats will be awarded with prizes as will the boats with the best themes and costumes.
Enjoy the sporting side of carnival in the Algarve this year, wither as a participant or as a spectator at one of these fun events taking place over the next few days.
