Play.com – The holy grail of your expat needs

Something that really surprised me when I moved to the Algarve was the price of DVD’s. You might not think that is such a big deal but for a DVD addict such as myself it was an absolute nightmare as many of the latest DVD’s can cost over 20 Euros each which is around double the price of the DVD’s back in the UK. You can sometimes buy them cheaper but they are the clearance type items if you know what I mean, usually DVD’s that everyone has seen about 5 years ago.

So can you imagine how pleased I was when I discovered Play.com. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before but I am now able to get my DVD fix at the same price as when I was in the UK and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me, and what’s more, delivery to Portugal is absolutely free so I am not getting stung by delivery charges which would defeat the object of buying the DVD’s online.

If you are not familiar with Play.com it is a brilliant website that sells DVD’s, video games, music and a wide variety of other items. The prices throughout the website are extremely competitive and as I already mentioned, as there are no delivery charges you really do pay the prices that you see advertised.

The delivery times to Portugal state around 10 days but from my experience I have found that delivery is usually much quicker than that. One thing to remember when you are making your order  for delivery to Portugal is to change the currency to Euros. To do this you simply click on the Euro symbol at the bottom of the shopping basket and the rest is done for you automatically.

I have known several people who live in Portugal and swear by buying their laptops from Play.com. I have never done this myself but I have just looked at the laptops on offer at Play.com and their prices and they represent a massive saving on the prices that you would pay here on the Algarve so when I am next in need of a laptop I definitely know where I’ll be getting it from. I’ve also found that the same thing applies to the video games that I buy for my son. The savings on those are even bigger than those on my DVD’s, also with free delivery so that is yet another reason for using Play.com.

I’ve not bought a DVD for some time now – I download all my music from iTunes and stick it on a nano. I find this a lot easier – no warped or scratched DVDs.

You can just purchase the tracks you want and not the whole DVD which makes it cheaper – having said that, I do tend to search the library and end up buying a lot more than I would normally have done in the past.

    Hi Petrus

I am the kind of girl that loves to have the DVDs on the shelf and must have a collection of over 300 dvds and its perfect for in winter here in Portugal when the TV decides to suddenly stop working because of the weather outside.

I get all mine from either play.com, hmv and eBay. Though i get the best deals with eBay!

I do love itunes for filling up my sons ipod and once you start buying tunes you will end up with a huge supply of them!

    kind regards
