Macario Correia, the current mayor of Faro, has been told that he has 10 days to resign from his position following an order from the constitutional court of Portugal.
Macario Correia was found guilty of violating the laws surrounding spatial planning while he held the position of mayor of Tavira, however he challenged this finding and continued to act as the major of Faro municipality.
Now a final decision on the case has been made by the constitutional court of Portugal and he has been found guilty of the charges and must now stand down from his position as mayor because of the indiscretions in the past.
A statement from the PSD political party said that Macario Correia was currently formulating a statement of his “strategy” following the announcement and that he was working with his lawyer before announcing what he will be doing next.
The spokesman fro the PSD political party said that they were supporting the decision because “the PSD party respects all court decisions”.
The spokesman added that Macario Correia had been “a great president of the municipality” and that he also did a “great job in Tavira” and he emphasised the fact that Macario Correia is considered by his party to have made great headway in sorting out the finances of Faro Câmara and the debts that he inherited.
He concluded by saying: “We will now wait for Macario Correia and his lawyer to come to us and explain what their strategy is for the future.”
The municipality of Faro is now left in limbo as the political parties put together their own plans of action as to who will now run the municipality that is the capital of the Algarve.
Macario Correia was forced to resign after he was found guilty of violating planning permission laws for a series of private swimming pools in the Tavira area while he was mayor there in 2006. He initially appealed against this conviction but the constitutional court of Portugal has now rejected his appeal leaving him with only days to clear his desk and to leave his role as mayor of Faro Câmara.
Accusations of corruption from politicians have been rife in Portugal in the past decades but the police and courts have been working to rid government offices of corruption with cases such as these being used to highlight the fight against politicians bending the rules for their own gain.

Hello, my name is
Samantha Milner and I moved to the beautiful Algarve
in Southern
Portugal during the summer of 2008, with my husband Dominic and our seven year
old son Kyle for a better life living in the Portuguese sunshine.

30 Days To Move Abroad provides you with a comprehensive digital guide showing
you how it is to quit England in a matter of days. I personally moved my family
from rainy Manchester to the southern skies of the Algarve in less than 28 days
- so it can easily be done.Go through all our important steps and you will see how easy it is to achieve
this! You never know you may well beat my moving record.
Hello Samantha. My name is Erika and I am from Tavira. I’m currently living in London since last year because the situation in Portugal is not easy for young people, but I lived in Tavira since I was born until I was 19 and then I moved to Faro to go to the university. So I had the pleasure of living in both cities while the mayor Macario Correia was there and I can tell you that he’s the best mayor both cities have ever had.
Tavira was noting when he went to the city hall, and he managed to develop it as no one ever did. He took care of poor families and youth, the streets, the buildings, he developed great strategies for the local tourism and the city became well known internationally.
In Faro, he did a miracle. The city hall was bank rupt and he found a way to solve the situation. He made all the public services start working properly and he finished with the several illegalities being practiced by several public departments and private companies.
It’s easy to point our finger to somebody who made few small mistakes in order to improve the quality of living in certain area, and apparently is even easier to punish harmeless situations. But when it comes to punish bigger currupts in the Government, the justice fails. We just don’t know if it fails by mistake or if it fails on purpose.
I’m sorry if I sound upset but this is a frustrating situation. Anyway, I love your blog and I am a follower.
Good luck there =)
P.S: I’m sorry for my grammar and spelling mistakes. Writing is more dificult then speak.
Best regards,
Erika.
Welldone for speaking out about the Mayor If its true I hope he can stay on.
We have been coming to the Algarve now for 25years and are sad that all the local people with businesses are struggling to stay afloat We come over at least 4 times a year and try to eat in local restaurants and buy in local shops I am cross with Easyjet and Monarch Airlines they have put up flight prices and cut down on Flights into Faro over the last two years so unless they are willing to look at their time tables and prices they are doing nothing to help bring people over to spend money and keep people in work. At New Year our resort was so quiet, each year getting quieter so stop upping taxes and make it affordable for people to come and spend their holidays in a wonderful area with so much to offer.
