Enjoying the summer holidays in the Algarve

Many people in the UK are surprised and more than a little envious when I tell them that the summer holidays for the schools here in the Algarve last for 12 weeks. So from around the middle of June to the middle of September the children are able to completely relax and enjoy everything that this part of Portugal has to offer.

I have memories of my childhood in England and the summer break which lasted for around 6 weeks but I also remember the rainy days that seemed like winter, with nothing else to do than sit around and watch television until my mum had finished her housework and was able to spend time with me. How different things are here on the Algarve with long sunny days almost guaranteed and  my family and I are luckily able to take advantage of the weather to our hearts content.

Another great thing about the children’s school holidays here in Portugal is that, as the saying goes, the best things in life are free. Sure, we all go to the water parks and various other attractions but a day on the beach is absolutely free and probably just as enjoyable as any other activity that you could possibly think of. If you have been to this part of Portugal before you will be aware of the crashing waves and how suitable they are for a spot of belly boarding. I am not exaggerating to say that 3 hours frolicking around in the sea with your belly board can make you completely unaware of the time and it is not unusual to find that 3 hours have gone by without you even realising it.

The weather really does make so much difference and the school holidays are always so memorable  and if you are lucky to have an internet business like myself, you really can enjoy the whole 12 weeks so much more. I think what I enjoy more than anything is that all of the family are able to either eat out at one of the many reasonably priced restaurants in the evening, or simply sit out in the garden and talk into the night without having to think about getting ready for school in the morning.

There are many, many things that I absolutely love about Portugal and the 12 week school summer holiday is definitely one of them.

Thanks for reading my blog post and I hope you enjoy our expat tips. I love living in the Algarve and sharing my stories with you.

Thanks for reading
