Algarve Wines And Soft Drinks

One of the main reasons that people visit the Algarve is because they want to relax and for many, relaxing goes hand in hand with sitting back with a drink, whether that is an alcoholic drink or not.

Let’s get the beer drinkers out of the way first, even though I rarely order a beer there is no getting away from the fact that a frosted glass which is holding a cold beer looks appealing to nearly everyone on a hot day on the Algarve. The draught beer comes in either a small glass which is called an Imperial or a large glass which is called a caneca.

Algarve Wines

I am sure that you will agree with me when I say that one of my favourite pass times here in the Algarve is sitting in a bar or restaurant, enjoying the evening sun with a glass of wine and good company.

Many people ask me what drink I would recommend as it can often be confusing when presented with a wine list and it is all written in Portuguese and I am also often asked how expensive it is. Well, you will be pleased to know that the quality of wine that you get here in Portugal is superb and offers tremendous value for money but I always tell people that it is still a case of you get what you pay for.

Marinated Mushrooms (Cogumelos Marinadoes)

If you are looking for a cheap Portuguese  meal which will absolutely blow you away then look no further than  cogumelos marinadoes or marinated mushrooms. This is yet another dish that I hadn’t even heard of until I moved to Portugal and as I now put this together myself on a regular basis, it often amazes me how cheap the whole dish is and it compares with many other dishes where the ingredients are really expensive.

Sardines In Onion And Tomato Marinade (Sardinhas De Escabeche)

When I first moved to Portugal one of the first meals that I tried was Sardines in onion and tomato marinade (sardinhas de escabeche) and to say that it was absolutely beautiful would have to be something of an understatement.

I have got to admit though, my experience of eating sardines when I lived in the UK meant that I wasn’t really looking forward to the sardinhas de escabeche, as my only memories of anything which included sardines came out of a tin but these sardines in onion and tomato marinade tasted like nothing I had ever tasted before.

Homemade Sardine Pate

Sardine pate is something of a Portuguese speciality and it is absolutely delicious. Th funny thing about Sardine pate is that it looks pretty uninspiring but when you taste it you really do realise that looks aren’t everything.

In Portugal, sardine pate is one of the small dishes that is served before a meal with olives and a lovely bread which is unique to Portugal. If you are like me though, theses petisco plates as they are often called are so beautiful that I end up eating so much that I am full for the main course.

The Portuguese Wine

Even if you have never visited Portugal you will most probably have sampled the delights of the Portuguese wine because it is now being stocked all over the world due to the fact that it really is very good indeed.

Many of the wine experts who can often be quite snobby with regards to recommending wines that are not from the more popular regions are extremely enthusiastic about the Portuguese wine and it is gaining in popularity all of the time.

Piri Piri Chicken, Served With Chips And White Wine

If you have ever been to the Algarve there is an excellent chance that you will have expirienced the delights of Piri piri chicken, served with chips and white wine.

Piri Piri chicken has been described as the national dish of the Algarve and just picture in your minds eye, relaxing in an open air restaurant on the Algarve, the relaxing evening sun shining down whilst you enjoy the electric combination of the spicy piri piri sauce and the chilled dry white wine, absolutely unbeatable!

Algarve Food And Wine

Many people will associate the Algarve with beautiful scenery and glorious sunny weather and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but for me, even though I love the fantastic climate, the Algarve is all about the food and wine that is readily available.

Portugal, and the Algarve in particular is renowned for the glorious food and the wines that are available always seem to compliment the food perfectly, and there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting in a beautiful restaurant with views out to the sea, enjoying a fantastic meal.
