Batatas a Portuguesa

This potato dish is really popular all over Portugal and in Spain too. When out and about you’re bound to see this pop up on menu’s everywhere. It might not seem like much, but batatas a Portuguesa is actually an extremely yummy option for all ages.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 1/2 lbs new potatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoons of chopped parsley


In a large skillet heat the olive oil over medium heat.

When you see a light wisps of smoke leave the pan, add the potatoes.

Use a spatula to turn the potatoes frequently. Cook them for 15 minutes or until they are tender and golden brown. You’ll know when they’re ready when you can easily insert a fork and the potato feels soft.

Once done, remove the potatoes from the pan by putting them into a colander to drain of the oil. Remove the excess with a piece of kitchen towel.

Transfer to the bowl and season with salt and pepper, and sprinkle with parsley.

Extra Additions

If you want to spice the recipe up a little then there are a number of things you can do. For a rustic taste try leaving the skins on, or extra flavour chuck in some chopped onion.
