I remember the first time that I went to Sergio’s in Olhão. It was amazing meal and in a way I wish I had never been because I constantly have their food on my brain and if I never went I would never know what I was missing.
It was back in September 2008 and we went for my husband’s 32nd birthday with my parents and some other friends. My mum and dad had only just arrived in the Algarve for the winter months and were telling us how great the food was.
My Dad is the most annoying and fussiest eater I have ever met – so if he said it was good it had to be.
At the time we were living in Olhão and it was just around the corner from where we were staying though now it is a good hour’s drive away.
We have probably had dinner at Sergio’s about 10 times over the last three years and we have never been disappointed.
When we went this time we went for lunch and you have the choice of either a set lunch menu or one of the specialities.
Sergio’s in Olhão is most famous for offering the best steak on the stone in the whole of the Algarve and it comes served with beautiful garlic and herb cubed potatoes and some salad.
If you have never had the steak on the stone – it is well worth the price (13€ each) and you can have extra potatoes and salad for no extra cost. The wine is also very nice and very reasonably priced to go with your meal.
I have never actually had the steak on the stone – though my husband loves me enough to give me a little bit of his fillet steak!!!
Though me and my son (who is nine years old) will share a big kebab that is served with the same potatoes and salad. We usually have the sirloin steak and prawn kebab that is very nice indeed.
The meals are never really very expensive and it feels like you are having an amazing meal for a bargain price. No matter what we have to eat or what pudding we decide on it never costs us more than 20€ each.
We had two lovely kebabs each plus the steak on the stone and a good round of drinks and yet we had change from 40€.
The set meal for lunchtime is even cheaper and for 8.50€ each you get a main meal, bread, pudding, one drink for during your meal and a coffee.
We saw many people enjoying this great deal – but for us to drive for an hour for the experience we have to enjoy the specialities.
If you have never tried steak on the stone, get yourself to Olhão and try Sergio’s though I am afraid once you have tried it – you will certainly be back for more.
An Update:
We have been to Sergio’s about 12 times now and it remains our favourite restaurant in the Algarve and we have NEVER had a bad meal there. Its just such ashame its such a distance away from us, otherwise we would be there without fail every Saturday night!

Our directions
From Silves Sergio´s is quite a distance to travel but worth it. Travel down the A22 until you come to junction 15. Take that junction and then take the first exit at the roundabout. Follow this road for about 6km until you come to another roundabout and take the second exit. You will be on the N125 for about 200 metres until you see the sign for campismo. Take the left turn and follow the road until you come to some level crossings. The campsite is on your left hand-side but take the next right just before the level crossings. Continue down this road for about 400 metres until you come to a right turn just before the bridge and on your left hand side in white is Sergio´s.

Once you have moved to Portugal then comes the reality of actually living here. Most of us will have only ever spent holidays in Portugal before making the move and it soon becomes clear that life in Portugal is not all about lazy days by the pool and barbecues on the terrace.
